ETFs have become prominent features of the global investment landscape since their launch in the US two decades ago. The Australian market has been slow to embrace ETFs, though there are recent signs of change. This research paper discusses the mechanics, benefits and risks of ETFs, traces their evolution through to current uses and trends and provides recommendations about how retail and institutional investors in Australia should use ETFs in the portfolios.
